TNT statement on cabinet’s letter on the Postal Act in the Netherlands
Amsterdam, 25 May 2007 – TNT has taken note of the letter that the Dutch cabinet today sent to parliament concerning the proposal for a new Postal Act. In this letter, among other things, the government gives its view on a few of the amendments submitted by parliament.
The response of the government to the amendments indicates that it is standing by the key principles of the successful postal policy in the Netherlands.
Peter Bakker, CEO of TNT: “As I have already stated, it is TNT's view that the proposed Act is well balanced. With this letter the government shows that it is standing by that policy. We will have to continue to take care that we are not faced with a situation in which an increase in rules results in a greater administrative burden being placed on the provision of the universal postal service. As a result of TNT’s integrated approach to mail delivery, the Netherlands has the lowest price for a postage stamp in all of Europe. This is something we would like to see continued.”
Based on this package, TNT does not see any reason to in any way change the substance of its strategic or financial objectives regarding its postal operations, as communicated in December 2006.
In the coming weeks, the proposed Postal Act, and the amendments to this, will be put to the vote in parliament. Parliament still plans to have the Postal Act come into effect on 1 January 2008, assuming that there is a level playing field with Germany and the United Kingdom at that time.
