The appointment gives the AFM a strategic position in the international network of the world’s key regulators.

In brief

  • Hanzo van Beusekom has joined IOSCO’s policymaking body
  • Appointment confirmed at IOSCO’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, 18 October
  • Gives AFM strategic position in international network
  • AFM can now more effectively influence discussions in IOSCO (on sustainability, fintech, financial stability)

Van Beusekom: ‘Being on the IOSCO Board will offer us the opportunity to strengthen bilateral contacts with key regulators outside of the EU-27. In addition, it will enable us to more effectively influence discussions in IOSCO, particularly on sustainability, fintech and financial stability, and therefore indirectly also the IOSCO’s relations with other influential international organisations, including the Financial Stability Board.

IOSCO Board, the IOSCO’s policymaking body

The IOSCO Board is the IOSCO’s policymaking body and has 35 members, 19 of which represent the 17 countries with the largest capital markets worldwide. The IOSCO will be focusing on the following issues in 2022-2023: structural resilience of capital markets, data gaps and information sharing, new insights into investor protection, the role of securities markets in capital formation, and financial innovation.

Return after four-year absence

The appointment marks the AFM’s return to the IOSCO Board, which is partly due to the growth of the Dutch capital markets in the wake of Brexit, after an absence of four years. The Board membership fits in with the AFM’s ambition to increase international cooperation in order to address important issues. The IOSCO is the international body where market and conduct regulators for the capital markets share information and experiences with each other and jointly develop global standards and policy initiatives.
