Today the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, announced that international Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy Airport is to be expanded substantially. This was agreed between the New York and New Jersey airport authorities on the one hand and Delta Airlines and JFK International Air Terminal LLC (JFKIAT) on the other. JFKIAT is a wholly owned subsidiary of Schiphol USA, the airport operator and manager of Terminal 4, which was opened in May 2001.
Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement during a press conference held in City Hall especially for this occasion. Those present at the press conference included Richard Anderson CEO Delta Airlines, Governor David Paterson, Chris Ward Executive Director of the Port Authority, Camiel Eurlings, dutch Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and Jos Nijhuis, President & CEO of Schiphol Group and Pieter Verboom, CFO of Schiphol Group.
Delta Airlines will be Terminal 4’s biggest customer following its expansion. The expansion will entail nine new international gates, additional baggage space, customs and border-security facilities, etc. Construction work will begin in late 2010. The first phase of the expansion project is expected to be completed in 2013.
