AFM director Steven Maijoor has been elected as chairman of the IFIAR, the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators. Steven Maijoor has been appointed for a period of two years. He has already served as vice chairman of the IFIAR for the past 18 months.
IFIAR is a worldwide partnership of 31 independent supervisors of accountants' organisations. Its object is to share knowledge on the supervision of accountants organisations, to promote cooperation during supervision and to cooperate with other international organisations.
The AFM's participation in IFIAR contributes to the effective and efficient implementation of supervision, in particular with respect to accountants organisations that audit multinationals. International alignment is necessary for the supervision of accountants' organisations.
The IFIAR members met in Basel last week. The global leadership of the six largest accountants' organisations (BDO, Deloitte, EY, GT, KPMG and PwC) was invited to participate in a substantial part of the meeting to discuss the consequences of the financial crisis.
Representatives of the Financial Stability Board, International Organisation of Securities Commissions, International Organisation of Insurance Supervisors, Public Interest Oversight Board and the European Commission and the World Bank were present during part of the meeting in addition to the IFIAR members.
The AFM is committed to promoting fair and transparent financial markets.
As an independent market conduct authority, we contribute to a sustainable financial system and prosperity in the Netherlands.
